The historical neighborhood of Roxbury in Boston, MA seeks interventions, as the neighborhood is located in a food desert. The Nourishment Center is a community kitchen and pantry that aims to serve the community as a central gathering space, as well as provide food resilience for the community. Through acts and events within the kitchen and the table, this translates to educational opportunities for the community to learn cooking skills and food resilience skills. The Nourishment Center also hosts residential leadership opportunities. This live-in leadership opportunity is a rotating, community selected leadership position where passionate leaders are tasked with organizing events/programs, overseeing finances, administration, and maintenance. The Nourishment Center has open doors to anyone in the community, serving as a second home.
The Nourishment Center works closely with the Greenhouse to achieve food resilience in Roxbury. The Greenhouse focuses on producing and harvesting fresh produce and fish to distribute to the Nourishment Center and other organizations. The Nourishment Center stores the harvested food, to then be cooked, consumed, and composted back at the Greenhouse.
The primary space contains kitchen and dining spaces, acting as the central gathering, social, space. There are classrooms and small study/lounge spaces located on the level above as the exchange space. The basement is dedicated to food storage, including walk-in refrigeration spaces and dry storage. The top level contains two studios for the residential leadership program.
